Paper Recycling Process

1. Paper Collection
The journey begins when used paper is collected from homes, offices, schools, and businesses through blue bins or commercial recycling programs.

2. Sorting by Paper Type
At recycling facilities, the paper is carefully sorted based on its grade, such as newspaper, cardboard, or office paper. This separation is crucial to ensure the quality of the recycled product.

3. Shredding & Pulp Formation
Once sorted, the paper is shredded into small flakes and combined with water and natural additives. This mixture becomes a thick slurry known as pulp, which breaks the paper down into reusable fibers.

4. Filtering & Ink Removal
The pulp goes through a filtering system to remove contaminants like tape, staples, and plastic. It’s then “de-inked” using air bubbles or water washing, lifting away ink and dyes from the paper fibers.

5. Refining & Whitening
If the recycled paper is intended for printing or writing use, it may be refined further and lightly bleached to brighten the pulp. For cardboard or paper towels, this step might be skipped.

6. Forming New Sheets
The clean pulp is laid onto wide mesh screens to drain water, then passed through heated rollers. These rollers dry and press the pulp into thin, continuous sheets of paper.

7. New Life, New Products
The dried and finished recycled paper is rolled into large sheets, trimmed, and sent to manufacturers to be turned into new products. These include printer and copy paper, newspapers and magazines, paper towels and tissue, and various forms of packaging and corrugated cardboard, giving old paper a valuable second life.
