instructions for how to pack asbestos waste

To ensure safety and compliance with hazardous waste regulations, follow these steps when preparing asbestos drywall for drop-off:

1. Wear Proper Protective Equipment (PPE):

  • Use a certified respirator (P100 or N100), disposable coveralls, gloves, and safety goggles.

2. Minimize Breakage:

  • Handle drywall gently to prevent releasing asbestos fibers into the air.

3. Double Bag or Wrap Securely:

  • Use 6 mil polyethylene plastic sheeting or heavy-duty asbestos disposal bags.

  • Wrap each piece thoroughly and double-seal with industrial-grade duct tape to prevent leaks.

  • If using bags, place smaller pieces into an asbestos-labelled bag, then into a second bag and seal both.

4. Label Properly:

  • Each package must be clearly labeled with:
“CAUTION: ASBESTOS – HAZARDOUS MATERIAL. DO NOT INHALE DUST.”

5. Transport Securely:

  • Use a closed vehicle or tarp-covered load. Avoid open or loose transport.

  • Make sure the load is stable and won’t shift or break during transit.

6. Do Not Mix with Other Waste:

  • Keep asbestos drywall separate from general waste, wood, or recyclables.
